About LD4D
Improving the landscape of livestock data
Livestockdata.org is a platform for evidence generated through the Livestock Data for Decisions (LD4D) community, as well as useful evidence from other expert sources. LD4D is dedicated to improving the landscape of livestock data by encouraging better use of existing data and analysis, and supporting collaboration on new and innovative data solutions.
Why does livestock data matter?
The livestock sector plays a significant role in our society, economy and environment. In Low-and-Middle-Income countries, hundreds of millions of people depend on livestock for nutritious food, income, and on-farm assistance. However, poor animal health and low productivity remain critical problems in these areas. Productive livestock can lift smallholders out of poverty and improve the food security of vulnerable communities. Good evidence is needed in order to optimise the strategies and investments that can support the livestock sector’s sustainable development.
Who we are: the LD4D community
Much of the data and evidence on this site is generated through the Livestock Data for Decisions (LD4D) community of practice.
The LD4D community aims to drive informed livestock decision-making by connecting data producers, data users, livestock advocates, and other key actors from academia, industry, not-for-profit and intergovernmental agencies. Together, we work to make better use of existing data and analysis, and collaborate on new and innovative data solutions.
Launched in January 2017, LD4D unites encourages its members to access and share expert knowledge and innovations, and work together on practical solutions to livestock challenges.
The site is maintained by the Centre for Supporting Evidence Based Interventions in Livestock (SEBI-Livestock), which acts as the secretariat for the LD4D community.
What we do
LD4D aims to help ‘data suppliers’ and ‘data users’ interact effectively, ensuring data supply and demand are met.
Through cataloguing and organizing livestock data, making it more discoverable and digestible, LD4D ultimately aims to guide investments that will improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries.

Acknowledgement
LD4D is facilitated and supported by the Centre for Supporting Evidence Based Interventions in Livestock (SEBI-Livestock), awarded to The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at The University of Edinburgh.
SEBI mobilises and applies data and evidence to help the livestock community make better investments that improve livelihoods for smallholders in low and middle-income countries.
