Improving Gender & Social Inclusion in Livestock Development
In the April 2025 Conversations session, we were pleased to welcome Guest Speaker Sofanit Mesfin, Regional Gender and Social Inclusion Coordinator at Ripple Effect.
Ripple Effect is an international organisation dedicated to empowering rural communities across six African countries to transform their lives. Through training and knowledge sharing, Ripple Effect supports farmers in sustainable agriculture, integrated livestock management, enterprise development, and gender and social inclusion.
Sofanit’s presentation highlighted transformative and adaptive programmes, emphasising on the role of farmers as the active agents for sustainable agriculture practices. Topics included:
- Integrating Gender Equity in Projects – Effective strategies for project planning, implementation, and transformative methodologies
- Household Tools for Gender & Social Inclusion – Practical approaches to bridging gender gaps (including the role of artificial insemination), and making gender involvement in livestock development more equitable
- Gender Data Collection Tools – Key challenges and opportunities in gathering meaningful insights

Sofanit Mesfin
Position Regional Gender and Social Inclusion CoordinatorFor over 10 years, Sofanit has been building gender and social inclusion into Ripple Effect projects through participatory community tools and training. Because her role involves working across east Africa, Sofanit covers gender and social inclusion issues in different sectors, countries and contexts, and collaborates with teams across Africa to share learnings. Sofanit is inspired by the families she works with, their positive experiences, and the lasting transformation which continues to give new meaning to her work.

The Gender & Livestock Data CoP Conversations take place every two months, starting in January each year. So far, we have hosted 23 webinars covering multiple topics – available in our online library.
Our community discusses a diverse range of topics related to planning, monitoring and evaluating gendered outcomes in livestock projects. These include selecting indicators for livestock value chains tackling challenges in collecting detailed gender-disaggregated data.
