Carbon Credits in Livestock: Brazil-Africa Knowledge Exchange Webinars

Photos: K. Gardner & A. Hoel

Join us for a two-part exploration of how carbon credit schemes can transform sustainable practices in the livestock sector.

As countries seek innovative approaches to reduce carbon emissions from agricultural systems, carbon credit schemes offer a promising mechanism to incentivise sustainable practices. Our initiative focuses on a unique South-South knowledge exchange among Brazil, Ghana, and Nigeria to explore the potential of carbon credits in the livestock sector. Through the lens of Brazil's experience, we'll examine practical applications and opportunities for Ghana and Nigeria in this innovative space.

By bringing together experts from these countries, we aim to address critical challenges in implementing carbon credit systems, with a specific focus on data requirements, evidence collection, and the evolving roles of public and private sector actors.

Webinar 1: Lessons from Brazil

About the Initiative

These discussions are part of the Scoping Climate-Smart Livestock Systems in Africa (SciCLiSA) project, which examines the potential development of agriculture-based carbon credit schemes in Brazilian livestock systems to inform similar initiatives in Africa, with an initial focus on Ghana and Nigeria.

The discussions are co-hosted by the University of Edinburgh’s Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems, the Livestock Data for Decisions network (LD4D), and the Centre for Centre For Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health (CTLGH). This Scoping Project is supported by the Climate-Smart Agriculture Partnership: UK-Brazil-Africa, which is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and delivered by Innovate UK.
