Integrating gender considerations in livestock modelling: GASL Side Event
Join LD4D at the 14th GASL Multistakeholder Partnership (MSP) Meeting to help shape the work of the our Solutions Group on Gender & Livestock Modelling.
Livestock economic models assess the future of livestock systems and the outcomes of investments in specific sectors. They can guide policy to help optimize herd composition, enhance productivity, improve breeding programs, and assess the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of livestock systems.
Participants from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Supporting Evidence Based Interventions in Livestock (SEBI-L), The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Global Centre for Gender Equity have worked as part of a Livestock Data for Decisions network (LD4D) ‘Solutions Group’ for the past year to integrate gender considerations in livestock modelling. The goal is twofold: ensure that livestock investments do not disadvantage anyone and that future livestock systems are socially sustainable.
Now the Solutions Group needs your feedback on our work. We would like to engage with three distinct groups- model users-decision makers, model producers- economist, researchers and gender practitioners to test our framework and guidance. In order to do this we will lead an interactive, consultative session with questions and interactive engagement that aims to explore stakeholders’ experience with livestock modelling, how they would use gender equity objectives, including how and why they currently engage with these areas.
Objectives
- Bring decision makers, economic modellers, and gender practitioners together to consult on what would make frameworks for gender integration into livestock modelling exercises useful to them.
- Raise awareness about the work being done through the LD4D convened solution group addressing ‘Gender Integration into Livestock Modelling’
- Drive broader engagement and use of the framework and guidance to support gender integration into models that will be released through the solutions group in late 2026
Linkage with GASL MSP meeting
The economic models represented are essential components driving investment in livestock economic development and can be even more beneficial to women farmer and pastoralists if they have outputs that articulate benefit to male, female and youth livestock keepers. GASL aims to guide the sustainable development of the global livestock sector. Livestock modelling is key for the future of livestock systems. Integrating gender considerations in livestock modelling is key for the future of equitable and sustainable livestock systems. Gender-sensitive modelling is therefore key to achieve GASL’s mission of creating inclusive, resilient, and efficient livestock systems that reduce climate impact and enhance livelihoods. This side-event will help ensure that the pioneering work of the gender and livestock modelling solutions groups is relevant to GASL stakeholders and wider livestock community.
